A Family Outing

Once in a while, or perhaps more often now that I’m “free,” my family would drag me around to outings and places. Most time it’s just to my paternal grandparents’ home in Shah Alam (remember my earlier post “Back To Batik,” if you haven’t read it yet then you probably should…kidding…but you should, the setting was my grandma’s garden) but there were plenty of times that we’d try something new. This outing was just that. An exploration to one of Malaysia’s national heritage, Pasar Seni, by way of one of Malaysia’s more modern mode of transportation, the LRT.
About “Family Outings”
Before we enjoy a little personal journey through Malaysia with the family let me explain a little bit about this new section I’m creating for La Vie Umami. As the name suggests, it’s a section where I will be taking photographs and writing about my outings with the family and with that comes a certain change in style and aesthetics. For one thing, my father tends to walk what I call the “American speed” where you either catch up to him or lose yourself in the dust he leaves behind. So, there’s no time to center yourself or pose or compose the shot. I am, in essence, the only “lifestyle” or “creative” photographer in the family so, the chances of me being in front of the camera is fairly slim. Lastly, I aim to use this opportunity as inspiration for other posts and sections to come.
All in all, I hope you enjoy these little snippets of Malaysia as you venture with us on our Family Outings.
Pick A Stop, Any Stop: Pasar Seni
So as luck would have it (well, more accurately, my aunt, Mak Su, suggested I visit the place), the first stop on this Family Outing since the creation of La Vie Umami is a site that I’ve always heard but have never visited, Pasar Seni. Pasar Seni (which literally translates to “Art Market”) is a National Heritage Site that houses various art, craft, and knick-knacks. It was founded in 1888 and originally built by the British in the 16th century who were the “rulers” of Malaya at the time. Before Pasar Seni was an “art market” (which I don’t really see it as being that…more of a tourist trap selling crafty stuff) it was originally built as a wet market for the many people that lived in the area including tin miners. In any case, that’s it for our little history lesson. Enjoy this photo-journal adventure with ma famille (my family).
